excuse my mannors, you may turn the page
but this play is a book and your world is a stage
i begin tonight with a story or two
about a man named lonely, and his friend called la rue.

la rue and lonely were a peculiar couple
with stains and chains and ultimate pain
these two caused quite the scuffle

but before i delve deeper into this plot
i might warn you to fear or even assume
that this pair is bound for perilous doom.
but along i continue with this woeful tale
about two men, a hammer, and a terrific nail.

into the evening both of them plunge
while lonely's shoes soak up water like a sponge
la rue flaps and squeels with his bottle of rum
while neither of them realize the danger to come.

A snap of a twig foreshadowing fear
a tick of a clock and the twitch of an ear
suddenly they slip, twist and fall
until they're released into a cramped black hall

they search and search, but to no avail
the only things found are a hammer and nail
what to do with these? an idea comes to mind
abismal energy that robs the body blind

so with pity and anguish la rue takes the hammer
and proceeds to asks lonely, with a bit of a stammer
"you go first, ill go second"
commiting a sin that can never be for reckoned

Then Lonely takes up the nail and contemplates his choice.
one he could die, one he could rejoice
solemn and mundane he takes his turn
in stealing his life, in sealing the burn

No doubt they are together once again
reunited in heaven as two holy friends
but condemned to sit and watch that black hall
that so many dead souls so fondly recall.
